Instead, the applause that we Toastmasters offer is a heart felt applause that is designed to give strength and encouragement to a fellow member who is placing themselves at risk in an effort to better themselves on their journey to become a better person, citizen, employee, employer, Christian, or any other worthwhile goal. The applause signifies that this Toastmaster has the full weight and support of the club behind them in this endeavor. Many people have gone on to greater success than they thought possible because of the encouragement given them by their companions. The applause that we offer a fellow Toastmaster is that encouragement. By Jennifer Merritt Time flies when you are having fun. It is hard to believe that five months have passed since the Toastmaster year began. During this time our club has experienced growth in the area of friendships, fellowship and membership. The goal I have set as VP-membership and Grace Church Club is to add 12 new members this year. To achieve this goal, each of us must reach out to others. There are benefits received by all as the club experiences growth. One added benefit a large club experiences is not having to scramble to fill roles for upcoming meetings. Secondly, it is with anticipation that members actively increase their ability to listen as seasoned members and new members participate during the Table Topics portion of the meeting. Thirdly, a successful club is supportive. Mentors are assigned to help new members in preparation of their speeches. I personally enjoy being a sounding board. It is important that new members feel welcome and understand that everyone began this journey as a new member. By President Mark Johnson Recently, a visitor to our group asked some very interesting questions and made some thought provoking comments. When anyone at Toastmasters goes to the lectern, we as a group applaud until that person arrives at the lectern. Our visitor found this very annoying. At Toastmasters, we have the practice of guarding the lectern. After speaking in any capacity, a Toastmaster remains at the lectern until control is passed to the next person. Our visitor found this to be more cosmetic than functional. I will address the first comment in this article and address the second comment in a subsequent article. Why do we applaud a fellow Toastmaster all the way to the lectern? Consider this scenario. You are asked to make a presentation at your work, school or volunteer organization. Your turn to speak arrives. As you walk to the front of the group, there is no applause. Three or four individuals are talking on cell phones totally oblivious to your existence. Several people are looking at their watch and then looking for the nearest exit. You spent a considerable amount of time preparing for your speech. How would you feel? All of us at Toastmasters are on a journey to improve ourselves. We step outside of our comfort zone to stretch and grow. We take risks because the only way to grow is to risk. The applause that we offer a fellow Toastmaster is not the light perfunctory applausne to attend a few meetings before signing up for a role or giving the icebreaker speech outlined in the Communications and Leadership Manual. As always, ideas and comments are welcome. This year will continue to be successful as we come together in a spirit of love and commitment. We are blessed with new ideas, talent, and perspective as others join our Club. selves on their journey to become a better person, citizen, employee, employer, Christian, or any other worthwhile goal.
